Low-cost monitoring of subsurface CO2, hydrogen and heat storage
The aim of SUSTAIN is to provide a software product for engineering firms to monitor the evolution of their CO2, Heat or Hydrogen storage operation. Governmental regulations currently demand that engineering firms, such as Oil & Gas companies, monitor their subsurface operations. This is particularly the case for CO2 storage, where the risks of the CO2 leaking out of the formation must be minimized. Consequently, monitoring costs can amount to 50% of the total cost of the storage operation, reaching 10’s of Millions of CHF a year. SUSTAIN's unique monitoring software makes use of cheap and abundant geomechanical data which is currently overlooked by the industry, but contains valuable information regarding the evolution of pressure and temperature in the reservoir. SUSTAIN uses a unique combination of advanced geomechanical simulators, probabilistic inversion algorithms, and site-specific geological models to robustly and autonomously characterize the reservoir during the injection operation in real-time. Consequently, our monitoring solution can be provided at 100th of the current price of traditional techniques, providing an affordable solution to emerging companies in CO2, heat and hydrogen storage.
