Bachelor Biochemistry – Chemical Biology
Chemistry of Life
Understanding the chemical properties of biological building blocks, their transformation processes and interactions with their environment, both at the molecular and macromolecular level in the test tube and in living organisms, is crucial.
Educational objective and career profile
This curriculum provides a sound theoretical and practical training in the core subjects of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. Building on a broad foundation of basic scientific knowledge in mathematics, physics and general and physical chemistry, teaching focuses on organic-chemical and biochemical reaction mechanisms, including chemical synthesis and research into the mode of action of biologically active compounds. The structural, physical and biochemical principles underlying the function of biological macromolecules and supramolecular complexes are taught.
Biochemistry is, despite great progress in theoretical and computer-based directions, still a craft. Great emphasis is therefore given to practical training in the laboratory. Extensive practical courses are offered with associated seminars. Under the supervision of assistants, the students train their manual skills, learn fundamental and contemporary methods and techniques, and put the lecture material they have heard into practice.
In the third year of study, block courses are offered that convey chemical-biological science as a process and combine lectures with experimental work, seminars and the literature.
Graduates of this course of study are, among other things, sought-after specialists in biochemical research laboratories in the university environment or in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological or biomedical industry.
