ETH Zurich is planning to establish a new teaching and research center for responsible digital transformation with a global focus at the Heilbronn educational campus. Supported by generous donations from the charitable Dieter Schwarz Foundation, an ETH campus featuring approximately 15 professorships and a diverse range of courses will be developed in Heilbronn over the next 30 years.
Background
Since 2010, an education center named external page Bildungscampus Heilbronn has been established in Heilbronn, located in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Primarily funded by the external page Dieter Schwarz Foundation (DSS), a German charitable organization, various educational institutions have been developing unique research and education programs in Heilbronn. The campus currently hosts over 8,000 students across different educational levels, with plans to grow to more than 10,000 students in the medium term.
The DSS is committed to transforming Heilbronn into an internationally recognized university hub. To achieve this, it is forming strategic partnerships with leading universities in Europe, North America, and Asia. The Technical University of Munich (TUM) became the first internationally renowned university to establish a presence on the Heilbronn campus, offering research and teaching since 2018/2019.
Additionally, ETH Zurich and the Dieter Schwarz Foundation have signed a declaration of intent to create a new teaching and research center focused on responsible digital transformation with global impact. Through the foundation's support, approximately 20 new professorships in Zurich and Heilbronn are planned over the next 30 years.
ETH Zurich is expanding its presence in Heilbronn
ETH Zurich is planning to establish a long-term presence in Heilbronn to expand its research and educational activities. The necessary infrastructure is currently being developed to enable ETH to operate locally. At the same time, the appointment process for new professorships is underway. The first professors are expected to begin their roles in Heilbronn in 2026, alongside the launch of degree programs. ETH also plans to offer summer schools and short courses in Heilbronn starting as soon as possible.
