Studying and working at ETH Zurich can be quite demanding. Luckily the university environment offers a number of opportunities to get back to nature. life presents a selection of five relaxing outdoor spaces on the Zentrum and H?nggerberg campuses.
Up where the air is clear: the garden terrace of the LEE building offers you a little bit of that holiday feeling. Take a break on one of the loungers or chairs and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere among the lush landscaping. The terrace is open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
A magical little forest in the city centre: in the Haus akigarden, you will find winding paths, benches and a terrace overlooking the city – all under a dense canopy of leaves. This cosy little forest is open Monday through Friday, from 8.15 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A grand view under chestnut trees: taking the time for a short hike up the Zürichberg will reward you with a unique panorama. At the lookout point of the Reformierte Kirche Fluntern (Reformed Church of Zurich Fluntern), visitors can take in the amazing view over the city and the lake.

It’s particularly worth pausing on one of the spacious benches at sunset to catch the final rays at the end of the day. You can enjoy the views, the atmosphere and the sunshine here every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The perfect place for green fingers: the CHN building’s roof terrace offers a tempting breath of fresh air. A line of trees provides shade, while plant boxes distributed around the space emphasise the overall green garden feeling. The terrace is accessible for a refreshing break Monday to Friday from 6.30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

An unexpected oasis: at the heart of the H?nggerberg campus lies the Flora Ruchat-Roncati Garden, a natural meadow surrounding a small pond. Trees and surrounding buildings offer sanctuary from the hustle and bustle all around.
Still waters can also run shallow: those seeking peace and quiet will find a large pool of water next to the Student Project House, where they can unwind and cool their legs in the refreshing water.
Where students and foxes meet: just a few steps from the campus, tucked away at the edge of the neighbouring K?ferberg forest, you can find barbecue spots. They’re perfect for both nature lovers and barbecue fans – you can get a taste of country life right in the heart of Zurich.
A sheltered spot to sit back and relax: the inner courtyard of the HPF building is perfect for anyone who needs to switch off for a while. This simple spot in a central location is a great place to take a spontaneous break and recharge your inner solar batteries. It is accessible from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Between meadow, forest and hill: although it’s right next to the street, this cosy spot is well surrounded by greenery. Why not pause here for a moment or two – and maybe pick up some wanderlust for the rest of your journey?
In future, green spaces will become even more important.
