Employee survey 2021: your opinion matters!

The next edition of the employee survey will run from 23 March to 23 April 2021. The survey gives you, the employees of ETH Zurich, the opportunity to express your opinion and share feedback about your working situation at the university. In doing so, you can help shape the university’s development.

It is important for the Executive Board to stay aware of the mood of the staff in order to get an overview of employee satisfaction at the university. This survey reflects the viewpoints of ETH employees on their working situation, which provides a valuable starting point for the university’s future development. By sharing their subjective assessments, employees can help point out the strengths of ETH Zurich as an employer, what the university should improve and what measures need to be taken.

As the survey is conducted at regular intervals, it can track the level of employee satisfaction and how it changes over time, making it an important analytical tool. The surveys can help identify areas with room for improvement early on so that targeted solutions can be found, and they also help monitor the success of measures that have already been implemented.

Although some questions deal with the current coronavirus situation, the survey is not specifically dedicated to this issue. The Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology is currently conducting a survey on remote and virtual working during the pandemic.

How does the survey help employees?

The survey empowers employees to influence their working situation by allowing them to openly give input on any problems or needs they have in the workplace.

Employee feedback provides a good basis for making improvements in all areas and shows where there are issues and possibilities for further development – information which helps ETH Zurich devise and implement the right measures.

Is the survey anonymous? Will my data be treated confidentially?

Yes and yes: ETH Zurich has commissioned external page Empiricon AG, an independent research and consulting firm specialised in employee satisfaction, to conduct the online survey and analyse the results.

Empiricon AG guarantees 100% confidentiality in handling your data. ETH Zurich will not have access to any individual’s responses, and Empiricon AG will store and analyse the questionnaires directly. The firm ensures that it is impossible to trace responses back to any individuals. This also applies to smaller organisational units: the questionnaires will only be analysed for teams or research groups where there are a minimum of five respondents. Additionally, all results will be anonymised and aggregated for each academic or administrative department.

Who can take part in the survey? What’s the procedure?

The survey will run from 23 March to 23 April 2021. All ETH Zurich employees with a level of employment over 30 percent will be invited to participate.

The questionnaire is only available online and takes around 20 minutes to complete. On 23 March 2021, Empiricon AG will send ETH employees a link to the survey questionnaire, which is available in German and English.

The plan is to communicate the findings to the academic departments, central units and staff units towards the end of the summer. Employees will be informed about the findings and next steps for ETH as a whole.

Additional surveys

Internal communication also plays an important role in employee satisfaction at ETH Zurich by keeping you informed about decisions, developments and happenings on campus. An additional survey will give you the opportunity to share your view on internal communication at ETH Zurich: What topics are you interested in? How do you use the university’s internal communication channels? What do you think of them?

The internal communication survey will run from 30 March to 23 April 2021 and will be conducted by the independent opinion research institute external page gfs-zürich. The results will be used to tailor ETH Zurich's communication channels to best suit your needs and to improve the information flow and exchange within the university.

And of course, we haven't forgotten our students: they too will be invited to take part in a survey to find out how satisfied they are with their studies at ETH Zurich. The student survey is run by external page Kunz & Huber AG, an independent market research firm, and will be held from 13–25 April 2021.
