On 1st of July 2022, the ETH Executive Board adopted new Guidelines for Research Data Management (RDM), to which all researchers working at ETH Zurich are expected to comply.
According to these new guidelines, all research data must be digitally documented to adhere to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. The use of Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) for documentation of lab work is recommended.
The Scientific IT Services (ID SIS) of ETH Zurich provide the Research Data Hub and the Research Data Nodes RDM services that support researchers at ETH Zurich in complying with these new guidelines. The services are based on the external page openBIS data management platform.
The services provide:
- Access to an Electronic Lab Notebook for documentation of experiments and analysis processes;
- Access to an Inventory management system to keep safe track of all samples, materials, equipment and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used in a research lab;
- Access to a external page JupyterHub server for analysis of data stored in openBIS with Jupyter notebooks and for storing results back in openBIS;
- Access to powerful APIs in different languages for analysis of data stored in openBIS and for storing results back in openBIS;
- Storage of data on infrastructure from the central IT services, which includes data backups;
- Easy access to the free long term storage provided by the central IT services;
- Simplified publication of data in the ETH Research Collection, via direct transfer of data from openBIS;
- Dedicated infrastructure - Leonhard Med - for management of confidential and strictly confidential data
- Support for writing Data Management Plans (DMPs) for SNSF grant applications using a prefilled template;
- Consulting for group-specific customizations;
- Regular trainings available from the internal IT course catalog and announced via the openBIS ETH Zurich users mailing list.
