Setting up short URLs

Long URLs are not particularly suitable for distribution in printed matter. As an alternative, you can request to have a short URL set up:

Short URLs with the main domain of ETH, i.e. www.ethz.ch/abc must be approved by the Corporate Communications. Please indicate the purpose of the short URL in your request.
Short URLs with the subdomain of a unit of ETH, e.g. www.abc.ethz.ch/def can be simply requested by a person responsible for the website concerned.

Things to keep in mind

Order your short URL as early as possible, especially if it has to be ready for a fixed date. Allow at least 3 working days for the creation. The URL of the published target page (frontend) is required to set up the short URL.
Users are redirected to a target address after entering the short URL. The target address should be an website in the ETH domain. For example, the short URL www.ethz.ch/web-handbuch leads to the target page www.ethz.ch/services/de/service/kommunikation/websites/cq5/cq5-manual.html.
If the URL of the target page changes, the setting of the short URL must also be adjusted manually. In this case, you must send a new request to the ID Service Desk.
Each short URL is only available exactly once. Allocation is on a first come - first served basis.
Short URLs requests that are too general within the ETH main domain will not be approved (e.g. www.ethz.ch/bachelor as a redirect to the Bachelor information of a specific study programme). Use URLs that are more specific (e.g. www.ethz.ch/bachelor-computer-science).
