Events and workshops
During your studies we offer various events and workshops. They cover many aspects, ranging from the orientation event when you begin your studies to the workshop on how to draw up a study plan and the information event on oral examinations.
Starting your studies
The Prestudy Event is the best starting point for successful studies at ETH Zurich.
At this event you receive important information about your degree programme, and have the opportunity to network with your future student colleagues. Further information

Having a good start at a new university is key for to studying successfully.
The Check-?in ETH Online Event is for:
- Master's degree students who did not study for their Bachelor's degree at ETH Zurich
- Exchange and visiting students
In combination with the respective Check-in ETH website, it covers important information and insights, essential for a good start at ETH Zurich.

During Bachelor's degree studies
All events and workshops are in German
Many questions arise after the first few weeks of studies. How can I organise myself better? How do I approach the lecture material and the exercises? How do I maintain an overview?
At the event “A successful first year of studies” students from higher semesters recount their success strategies in a podium discussion. At the concluding aperitif all students have the opportunity to discuss what they have heard and get to know each other better.
Who is it for?
Currently, first-semester Bachelor’s degree students from the following degree programmes:
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Mechanical Engineering
When does it take place?
The middle of the first semester. At the given time your degree programme Study Administration Office will send an invitation by email to your netz account (@student.ethz.ch).

This event will be held in German.
In this workshop you become familiar with and implement a potential study planning method.
You will work out your provisional learning plan in advance on your own with guidance aids. In the interactive online meeting (lasting two hours) you will then deepen the planning method and receive tips and tricks from students in higher semesters of your study program on learning strategies per subject and on independent learning.

First-year Bachelor’s degree students (all degree programmes)
When does it take place?
- Degree programmes with split first-year examinations: November to December
- Degree programmes without split first-year examinations: April to May

Sometimes one fails the first-year examinations at the first try. How can you do better next time?
At this event you receive information on ways to repeat the examination and ideas for addressing what went wrong. Plenty of space is provided for your individual questions.
Who is it for?
First-year Bachelor’s degree students (all degree programmes except for D-CHAB)
When does it take place?
After grades have been announced, as follows:
- Degree programmes with split first-year examinations: September and February/March
- Degree programmes without split first-year examinations: September
After grades have been announced, your degree programme Study Administration Office will send an invitation by email to your netz account (@student.ethz.ch).
Tips and information sheets on failor in examinations are accessible at any time.

Do you already know what you want to do this summer? Do you have concrete ideas but don't know which option to choose? Or are you still at the very beginning?
In this workshop, you will analyse your career to date and your strengths. You will look back on formative events and recognise your values and interests. The focus is on self-reflection.
You will apply these insights to the issue at hand. You will work out which strengths can help you with future challenges. And you will take an important step forward in the question of how your path should continue after your Bachelor's degree.

Bachelor students in 5th semester or 3rd year

Use your second chance: reflect on your previous study behaviour, discover new study strategies and refresh your study planning.
At this workshop you will reflect on your situation and draw up new strategies for your second attempt in a small group. You set yourself new goals for the resit examinations and approach study planning from a fresh angle. Students from higher semesters who have successfully repeated the first-year examinations provide helpful tips.
Who is it for?
First-year Bachelor’s degree students who have failed the first-year examinations once. The workshop is currently offered for the following degree programmes:
- Agricultural Sciences
- Food Science
- Health Sciences and Technology
- Environmental Sciences
When does it take place?
The middle of the Autumn Semester
The workshop will be announced at the information event “Failed the first-year examinations – What now?”.

Expand Your Cultural Perspective.
This workshop offers you helpful insights and interactive exercises to build cultural self-awareness and facilitate your transition into your new environment. Immerse yourself in the culture of Switzerland and ETH and develop skills that will improve your intercultural communication and co-operation. Seize the opportunity to connect with other international students.

International Master’s degree students in their first semester.

Oral examinations – Made easy?
You need to prepare for oral examinations differently than for written performance assessments. Find out how at the event “Tips and tricks for oral examinations”. Here you will learn about the peculiarities of communication in an oral examination, receive tips on preparation and reflect on potential exam scenarios (performed live by actors).
