What is Moodle?
Moodle is a highly innovative open-source Learning Management System (LMS) which has been under development for years within a worldwide and very active community. Moodle tools help instructors to design learning activities and learning content interactively and to frame them within an appropriate context. This facilitates effective, future oriented university teaching.
Who should use Moodle?
Moodle is suitable for every discipline and for all instructors. Its ready-to-use tools make starting quick and easy.
Persons involved in teaching at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich have access to the Moodle Service. If you have any questions please send an email to
Where do I start with Moodle?
ETH instructors can open a Moodle course directly when they enter the course in .
If you need further assistance, the course "Building an effective Moodle course" will guide you through the basics of how to use Moodle and will help you plan and build your course. This short self-paced course is accessible for members of ETH.
How will Moodle enrich my teaching?
Moodle's greatest strength is its flexibility, which makes nearly all didactic scenarios possible. In particular, Moodle offers all the required tools for blended learning scenarios combined with classroom teaching.
Moodle motivates students to address learning content more actively. This makes it possible, for example, for you to create content with them, or have then process it alone or in small groups.
With Moodle you can design learning content on a multimedia base. For example, quiz questions can be integrated directly into text; students can comment directly on videos; and instructors can answer questions in a media format.
The various comprehensive Moodle tools make it possible to display feedback effectively, efficiently and interestingly. Our online examination team is happy to help you prepare and conduct official performance assessments.
